Web counters

A web counter is a script intended to count the number of times a particular web page is visited.

A link to the web counter is usually placed in the home page of web sites, allowing to know the number of times that page (most usual entry point) has been accessed, as an estimate of the traffic of the web site.

Usually, the web counter script is hosted in a server different from the machine serving the pages of the web site under control. The script increments the number of visits it stores, returning a small icon showing that number.

Web counters can be found in many pages in Internet. Many sites exist where such counters can be created and maintained for free.

An example of web counter can be found in zcounter. In the case of web-stat, the free counter is limited to a maximum number of daily visits that the counter can collect. Pay versions include support and very simple statistical information, always restricted to the home page (in general, to the page where the link to the counting script is placed).
